Why won't my home telephone line work? Urgent!?

For almost 5 days now, my home phone has no tone when used and when I try to call it with my cell phone, a beeping noise drones on instead of the usual ring. I have a feeling it has to do with the fax machine I just installed on my computer and set up with the same number for my home phone. My other theory is that it has to do with my deleting of my dial up service. Please, my father is looking for a job right now, and I earnestly don't want to stress him any more with this and have him call up AT&T for $100+! Any help is highly appreciated!
